Searching Cases by Name
Wisconsin Circuit Court Access is the tool. It reaches public circuit case summaries across the state, so pick Manitowoc County if a name or date search should stay local. Full first and last names work best. Before opening any result, compare the case number, type, caption, and filing date against what you already know.
- Open the official WCCA search through Wisconsin’s case-search landing page.
- Select Manitowoc County and enter the last name, then the first name.
- Add a case type, status, or filing range when results remain broad.
- Open the matching row and choose the case details or event area.
- Confirm identity through the case’s public fields without assuming similar names refer to one person.
Partial names work too. WCCA accepts at least three consecutive letters plus an asterisk. Its options to include parties lacking a middle name or birth date can keep a query from being too narrow.
| Field | Type | Required | Search note |
|---|---|---|---|
| County | Dropdown | Usually | Select Manitowoc for a local name or date search. |
| Last name | Text | Criterion | Complete name preferred; three letters plus * permits a partial match. |
| First name | Text | No | Narrows common surnames. |
| Business name | Text | Alternative | At least three consecutive letters can be used. |
| Filing date | Date | No | WCCA help limits a date-range query to 30 days. |
Manitowoc County WCCA Search
The WCCA public interface is the named portal for Manitowoc County circuit cases.

Simple search covers names, businesses, and case numbers. Advanced options add more filters. They bring in status, filing dates, case type, class code, and a structured case-number range. Results can be sorted before a case summary is opened. A form that fails to render usually means an outdated browser, so switch to a current one or use a courthouse terminal. No public bulk download or export is promised.
Tie any search to a real purpose: checking your own filing, confirming a hearing, tracing a public case of local interest, or doing historical research. A shared name alone proves nothing about identity.
Searching by Case Number
Nothing beats the case number as a search key. Take the official example 2002CF000001: it packs in the filing year, the case-type code, and a sequence number. WCCA also accepts a shorthand form, 02cf1. The search can normalize that compact entry, though copying the full number straight from a notice leaves less room for doubt.
Manitowoc County cases carry common codes. CF means criminal felony, CM criminal misdemeanor, CV general civil, FA family, SC small claims, PR probate, IN informal probate, TR traffic forfeiture, and FO nontraffic forfeiture. CT can appear in criminal-traffic contexts, so read the classification and caption instead of trusting two letters alone. The sequence number restarts each year within its type.
Manitowoc County Case Code Guide
Case types route both the search and the public-access expectation.
| Code group | Typical case | Search caution |
|---|---|---|
| CF, CM, CT | Felony, misdemeanor, criminal traffic | Disposition and display rules vary. |
| CV, FA, SC | Civil, family, small claims | Protected family details may be withheld. |
| PR, IN, WL | Probate, informal probate, filed will | Summary access differs from document access. |
| GN, ME, AD | Guardianship, commitment, adoption | These categories may be confidential or absent online. |
| TR, FO | Traffic or ordinance forfeiture | A city citation may belong to municipal court instead. |
Class code runs finer than case type. WCCA demands the complete code when that field is used. Unsure of it? Search the broader case type first, then inspect the classification the results show.
What a Case Search Returns
Open a WCCA result. You land on a case summary. The header identifies the record. Below it, an event history lists public activity in date order. Labels for filings and orders can appear there even when the documents themselves do not.
| Case number | The year, type code, and sequence assigned to the circuit case. |
|---|---|
| Caption and parties | The public case style and permitted party roles. |
| Case type | The broad category and, when shown, a more detailed classification. |
| Filed date and status | When the case began and whether it is open, closed, filed only, or reopened. |
| Court assignment | The Manitowoc County branch, judge, commissioner, or other official. |
| Case events | Public filings, hearings, orders, disposition, appeal, and financial activity. |
| Cross-references | Related case numbers or appellate links when displayed. |
One more click matters. The county's probate guidance notes that the court-event box is clickable and expands into the full public record view. "Full" means the public event history, not every document image.
Manitowoc County Summary Versus File
WCCA gives you public metadata. The actual complaint, motion, exhibit, order, or transcript sits with the Manitowoc County Clerk of Circuit Court. Any other releasable document sits there too. General public users cannot reach a party's document access through Wisconsin eFiling. The clerk's official page routes each request to the right office.

Access runs through several channels. Visit the clerk's Room 105 counter at 1010 South 8th Street, call 920-683-4030, or use mail, fax, email, or one of two public CCAP computers. Give the case number, document title, event date, and whether you want a plain or certified copy. WCCA itself is free. Copies carry the applicable statutory rate.
Statewide vs County Case Search
No separate circuit portal competes with WCCA here. The real comparison is between the statewide circuit index and local clerk access to the file.
| WCCA statewide search | Manitowoc County clerk access |
|---|---|
| Searches public circuit summaries across participating Wisconsin counties. | Locates Manitowoc Circuit Court files and releasable documents. |
| Best for names, numbers, types, dates, status, and event history. | Best for document copies, certification, and questions about local entries. |
| Free browser-based public summary. | Counter, phone, mail, fax, email, and courthouse terminal channels. |
| No general public document-image access. | Copy fees and legal access limits apply. |
Identify the case statewide, then go local when the task needs the actual court file.
Manitowoc County Search Jurisdictions
The Wisconsin case-search landing page separates circuit and appellate systems.

WCCA covers Manitowoc County Circuit Court. Appeals and Supreme Court matters need a different tool. They fall under Wisconsin Supreme Court and Court of Appeals Access, called WSCCA, for District II. Federal civil, criminal, and bankruptcy cases belong to PACER and the federal courts, not WCCA.
Municipal court adds another layer. Each municipality keeps its own clerk. Clerks in City of Manitowoc, Two Rivers/Mishicot, Kiel/Schleswig, and New Holstein/Cleveland keep the ordinance and local citation records. Call with the citation number, defendant name, and date in hand. A municipal record reaches WCCA only one way. That is when the matter moves into circuit court through an authorized route.
Access and Restricted Cases
Wisconsin Statute §19.35 gives the public a general right. It covers inspecting and copying court records, within limits set by other law. Circuit court files add more layers. Wisconsin Statute §801.19 matters, and so do Supreme Court Rule Chapter 72, specific confidentiality statutes, and any court orders. A Manitowoc County case summary may be public. That does not mean every document filed in it is public too.
Some categories are closed by design. Juvenile access runs through Wisconsin Statute §938.396. Adoption, guardianship, and civil commitment files are different. Those identified by the Manitowoc County Register in Probate stay out of the ordinary public online display. Family cases add one more limit. Docket entries can leave out financial, medical, child, protected-address, placement, and domestic-abuse details. One document may be sealed or redacted while the rest of the docket stays visible.
When something is restricted, ask whether a releasable part can be provided. A general records request will not break a seal or a statute. Authorized users may get in through a Temporary Access Code, but that code is not a public password.
Manitowoc County Display Limits
How long a Manitowoc County case stays in the online display depends on its category. WCCA help states that general civil cases other than small claims commonly remain for 20 years, while family matters remain for 40 years. Criminal, traffic, and forfeiture cases that ended in dismissal or acquittal can drop off sooner. An active warrant, an appeal, or money still owed can keep a court record visible longer.
An absent WCCA result may reflect age, confidentiality, sealing, expunction, or municipal jurisdiction. Check with the proper clerk before drawing a conclusion.
When the public online display ends, the clerk may still hold the court file. Search by case number where you can. Save the date you accessed the docket, and ask the clerk for a file check when you need a firm answer for historical or archival work.
Manitowoc County Appellate Search
The WSCCA interface searches Wisconsin appellate cases.

A notice of appeal starts its life in the circuit record. But the appellate case number, filings, and orders live in WSCCA. If the procedural path matters to your docket search, check both systems. Manitowoc County appeals go to District II. Final review may reach the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Which documents you can actually see still varies by record and access rule.
